True champions must defend their title, and we must ask the question eternal: Who is the Supreme Mortal Kombat Champion?

Kountdown: 10 Returning Kombatants Ready to Kontinue!

After three long years, we've got Mortal Kombat sequel fever! At the behest of series director [Ed Boon]: we're counting down to June 2nd -- that's next Monday (if you haven't noticed)! It's also right around the time we've seen the unveiling of pre-E3 launch trailers for Mortal Kombat (2010) & Injustice: Gods Among Us (2012)!

Over 80% of the MKOmmunity is convinced the June 2 countdown will fulfil our desires. There are other theories and some new ideas, but with reported leaks and the general timing, we've got good reason to talk MK sequels!

As speculation about sequel content starts to mount; one of the leading queries is exactly which characters will make it back for another go around. By the end of the time distorting Mortal Kombat reboot plot -- a majority of Earthrealm's greatest champions were left for dead in the bowels of Netherealm! Last week, we looked at the Top 10 Replacement Kombatants Ready for a Comeback who could fill that void! This week; the Mortal Kombat Online Kountdown is turning an informed eye toward the survivors who could carry over into a next gen sequel!

With the previous game retelling a simplified and slightly altered version of the original trilogy: all signs are pointing toward a reprisal of the plot from 1997's Mortal Kombat 4. We eagerly anticipate the rise of fallen Elder God Shinnok -- whose evil plan appears to be going very well! Who will help or hinder the villain in this hypothetical sequel? Here are our Top 10 Returning Fighters from Mortal Kombat (2011):

Mod Koms: Back to Block - Mortal Kombat Minecraft

Yesterday, we turned the spotlight on Sean Cantrell and his magnificent Mortal Kombat Lego. His blocky, toy inspired renders showed what might be if the world of Mortal Kombat were mere bricks and blocks. It was a wonderful proof of concept -- but what if you want to actually play with your toys?

Del Cottonwood is another industrious fan who has adapted the brutal world of Mortal Kombat into a simpler, blockier realm. Like Cantrell, he's adapted vast swaths of the Kombat cast, but in this case, they're downloadable skins for free-to-play sandbox sensation: Minecraft!

You would've had to have been lost in a pixelated underground cavern for the past few years to not know what Minecraft is. Launched in 2011; the stylized pixelated sandbox gives you a world of sky, water and earth to do with as you please. Its success has taken it to home consoles and driven an empire of paid alternatives, but the principle remains the same. Check out some of our favourites Minecraft Kombatants below:

Tournament 2013: Who is the Supreme Mortal Kombat Champion?

Smoke d. ScorpionRaiden d. ErmacThis time last year, Mortal Kombat Online put the call out to the entire fanbase. The purpose: to celebrate twenty years of Mortal Kombat by determining once and for all who could be called the true champion of the tournament!

After months of debate and thousands of votes it was Sub-Zero who emerged victorious! The MKII ice warrior was a worthy winner, but as any champion knows, there comes a time when the title must be defended! With 2013 marking the twentieth anniversary of Sub-Zero and the sequel he debuted in, it's almost inevitable that we ask the question anew: Who is the Supreme Mortal Kombat Champion?

Update: First Mortal Kombat Legacy Series 2 Cast Photo(s)

The July announcement gave fans of Mortal Kombat: Legacy a list of characters to shoot for, but today we get our first look at the costumed line-up thanks to social networking director, Kevin Tancharoen (@KTANCH).

Brian Tee Hypes Liu Kangs Return to Battle in Legacy

With the arrival of the tournament in Mortal Kombat: Legacy Series 2, one of the biggest new additions to the live-action adaptation will be Shaolin fighting monk and traditional series icon: Liu Kang!

The responsibility of fighting for the fate of the world will rest on the shoulders of Brian Tee (The Wolverine, Crash) -- a name revealed to us earlier this month in a major casting announcement by Warner Brothers [full story]. Tee is promising big things for his take on the famed role, and sent us a red carpet interview with Asians On Film where he discusses exactly that!

Revealed to us in a recent photo shared by the director (Kevin Tancharoen), we've known to expect something different from this version of Liu Kang. Changes to the familiar icons of the games have been a staple of Tancharoen's work -- but something that won't change is Liu Kang's opposition to arch-nemesis Shang Tsung!

Tee (@brian_tee) tweeted about his on-screen encounter with Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa -- the Shang Tsung actor who is returning to the role he made famous in the 1995 feature film!

The rivalry between Liu Kang and Shang Tsung has been a defining element throughout the history of the games. Liu Kang's victory in the tournament of the first game was a seminal moment and driving inspiration for the '95 movie. Ten years later Tsung succeeded in murdering his nemesis, but their battles would transcend death (and time) with the infamous invention of Zombie Liu Kang, before a series reboot in 2011.

The exact roles and relationships that will play out in the Legacy version of the tournament remain to be seen. As will the appearance of certain characters. Tancharoen (@KTANCH) sent out our first look at Tagawa back in the role, sporting what may or may not be a bald look for the character.

Legacy: First-Look as Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa Begins Filming

He's one of the most beloved members of the 1995 feature film cast -- and he's back in action! Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa officially returns to the role of Shang Tsung as filming continues on the second series of Mortal Kombat: Legacy.
